When "The Cap" Fits, bare it
!
By Liz Egger
In which I explain my love / hate relationship with the "nudist paradise" of Cap d'Agde.
( From July 2005)
I have a problem.
You see, as naturists, I'm sure we've all yawned at the old saying "There's only two things you can do with your clothes off - and the second is to take a bath!"
You and I know much better, but the fact is that nudity is inextricably linked with sex in the minds of the unenlightened, and naturists are lumped together with swingers, voyeurs, "flashers" and, worst of all, paedophiles by many otherwise rational people. The vast majority of our fellow human beings, brought up to regard sex and nudity as one and the same thing, just cannot understand the concept of nudity for its own
sake.
Unfortunately, their misconceptions are reinforced by the many so- called "naturist" clubs and organisations which are in reality nothing more than sex and swapping clubs, Sadly, these are the organisations which gain the most publicity, and when yet another "naturist" club is exposed as a sordid swingers rendezvous the general public nudge each other knowingly and declare that all nudists are the same.
Of course we are all normal human beings, and I would be the last person to suggest that naturists should sign an oath of purity and chastity. But, for the sake of naturism as a movement and our own reputations in particular, we should condemn, discourage and distance ourselves from any organisations that use nudity as an excuse for sexual licence masquerading as naturism.
Which is why I have a problem.
James and I have just returned from Cap d'Agde, the famous nudist “city” in the glittering South of France The resort is one of the largest of it's type in the world, and during the day the naturist facilities are superb. It is a clean, friendly, innocent and happy place, which for once lives up to
expectations. I could write pages about our stay in Cap d'Agde and still not tell the whole story. But, space is limited, and you wouldn't believe half of it anyway.
So I'll just say that the journey was murderous, the weather was great, the accommodation was good, the facilities were brilliant, the beach was clean, the site was amazing and the entertainment - both official and unofficial - was, umm... entertaining. Although there were nearly 40000 people on site, there was none of the loutish behaviour that spoils so many other resorts, and even at night-time when the "demi -monde" emerged for their nightly revels, the atmosphere was always relaxed. good-natured and friendly.
It is a good place for children, but after dark you may want to avoid some of the more outrageous venues, or you might have some embarrassing explanations to make! You see, when night falls, the place loses its innocence. Wholesome nudity is replaced by outrageous exhibitionism, the bars and Cafés feature near explicit sex-shows, virtually anything goes, in public, and the site becomes a sort of Sodom on
Viagra.
In short, Cap d'Agde after dark is just the sort of place that we as genuine naturists should disapprove of and never go near again.
And that, my friends, is the problem.
Because I loved it!
And will we be going back? You bet!
'Til next time,
Liz
